Interstate moves reward planning. Use this countdown to stay ahead of the truck.
8 weeks out
Research and shortlist movers, verify their USDOT/MC numbers, and schedule in-home or video surveys. Start a folder for every estimate and document.
6 weeks out
Collect written estimates and compare them line by line. Book your mover and get the Order for Service with agreed dates and a delivery window in writing.
4 weeks out
Begin decluttering and using up food and supplies. Order packing materials, and notify schools, doctors, and service providers of the move.
2 weeks out
Confirm details with your mover. File a change of address, transfer or cancel utilities, and arrange travel for yourself, your family, and any pets.
1 week out
Pack a personal essentials box (documents, medications, chargers, a few days of clothes). Defrost the fridge and dispose of hazardous, non-allowable items.
Moving day
Be present for the inventory. Read it carefully, note the condition of items, and never sign a blank Bill of Lading. Keep your copy until delivery and any claims are resolved.
Delivery day
Check items against the inventory as they come off the truck. Note any loss or damage on the paperwork before you sign — that documentation is key if you need to file a claim.
A long-distance move can span several days and multiple agents. A written timeline keeps every party accountable.
